All Things Woolly

Been a bit busy with the hooks and needles over the past couple of weeks and been rather lax on posting in my blog… sorry to my followers for the tardiness but here are the reasons why….

Made myself something for a change – a pair of socks and a top – both knitted.

My top – Panda Acrylic 8 ply

My socks –  Happy Feet 3 ply

I also made a couple of gorgeous little cardi’s for my best friend’s brand new twin great nieces – but found out just last night that they are too small- the little girls are growing just so quickly! So they have been saved to go on their first dolls…. how cute.

And the job that took the longest…… Christmas gifts for my old school friend’s grandkids. Carol contacted me from Oz a couple of months back and asked if I could make a couple of hats for her grandies … Of course I can, says I…. within a very short space of time, the couple of hats grew to be 3 baby jackets (like the ones above) with matching boottess; 4 ninja turtle hats, a minion hat and matching scarf, a boy’s ear flap hat and matching scarf, an owl hat, a ladies slouchie hat in purple, a ladies slouch hat and matching scarf in pinks, and a ladies slouch hat and matching scarf in black and blue which I changed to shades of blue, teal and cream because the black and blue looked awful. When I showed the photo of the finished haul to my friend, her daughter has now ordered another owl hat for herself! I also made a Tunisian crochet neck warmer for my friend as a little present to her. She asked me how she was going to pay me to do the job… You aren’t, I told her… You are going down to Lincraft at Elizabeth (South Australia) and are going to buy me $180 worth or yarn and post it over to me…. About a week later 2 large boxes arrived here in Whanganui (NZ) with … get this…. 7.5 kgs of different coloured/styles/textures yarns inside…. it was like opening presents on Christmas morning… she had chosen just about every colour of the rainbow for me. And this is what I made for her….

Carol’s Haul

And as well as the above, I have finished just this morning a gorgeous little Tunisian crochet baby jacket in blue with bright yellow apple buttons on it, and am currently working on a tea cosy for my cousin’s wife.

Seems like my hooks and needles never stop.

The Great Gonville Tea Cosie Exhibition

During the week of 23rd – 31st July, Gonville Café Library’s Knitting ladies will be holding and exhibition and sale/auction of tea cosies made by the ladies as a fund raiser for our charity projects – this year it is Birthright Whanganui. The exhibition will be held at Gallery on Guyton in the centre of town. So if you are a local or even visiting Whanganui during that week, drop in and have a look at our handiwork, make a donation or buy yourself a beautiful tea cosy hand made with love by one of our very talented ladies (and gent).

Here are a couple of my own weird creations for the exhibition – don’t be put off by my craziness – not everyone knits or crochets weird stuff like me.

The Tea Cosy Project

At last! Kelly Scarrow – aka the Inked Librarian – has announced the Tea Cosy Project, which will run from July 23-31 at Gallery on Guyton. An exhibition of beautifully crafted tea cosys available for viewing and purchase. We have all been busy working on our respective tea cosies and let me tell you – there are some brilliant ones. Watch this space for more detail closer to the date.

Crafting again…

Been making lots of stuff this past weekend. We have had the worst floods in Wanganui in recorded history over the weekend. The River rose by 9 meters and many homes on the east side of town were flooded and had to be evacuated. The main shopping area was flooded and a number of schools have been closed today, along with roads in and out of town.

So to break the boredom of not being able to get outside and do anything, I made stuff and finished off stuff and just generally tried to keep warm. Had no internet for 2 days and even the tv reception was affected – thank god for heaps of downloaded movies thanks to friends who are into that sort of thing.

Here are a couple of free form crochet tea cosies I made or finished over the weekend

The top ones are quite dark – sorry about that – full size tea cosy in free form crochet using a variety of yarns and hook sizes.

Miniature tea cosy for one of my 3 miniatures – the teapot itself is no longer than a cigarette lighter. I used crochet cottons of various weights and types and steel hooks in sizes ranging from 0.6mm to 1.75mm.

I also made another miniature one too but haven’t photographed it as yet, did a pair of house slippers for myself, finished a beanie for my grand-daughter, finished a Scorpion for my man’s key ring, finished my Kiwiana coffee pot, finished on side and started the second on a poncho I am making for a friend, and started a second coffee pot…. gotta keep busy when it is wet and cold

Latest Crochet Projects

My hooks have been flying this past week or so, turning out several hats and a few other odds and sods..

Made a blue and pink one with a pompom for Kelly’s daughter Rhylee as well, and a cream and teal one for myself.

An adult version of the old 50’s style pixie hat – also for the lovely Kelly.

Made an infinity scarf for Scotty to keep his neck warm while he walks the perimeter fences at work on night shift.

I have a couple of pairs of kids moccasins on the go at present for the Birthright charity box too. And a poncho in the same style as the one I made recently in a deep teal colour for my daugter’s housemate over in Oz.

Kelly’s Poncho

At last – it is finished – the gorgeous poncho I have been making for my friend Kelly – it took some work too.

Whilst the pattern is not difficult to do, the actual written pattern was incorrect and I had to make a number of adjustments in order to get it right. The pattern is worked in 2 rectangular pieces then joined short edge to long edge, flipped and joined in the same way on the other side. However, when I got the prescribed 57 rows it looked way too small to fit Kelly, who is considerably taller and has a much wider wing span than me! So adjust I did and finished up making it double the prescribed length. I have to say, I am pretty pleased with the way it turned out. She looks gorgeous in it, but then Kelly could wear a sugar bag and make it look good imho.
